Linking Ideas with Transitions

Use however, therefore, in addition.

Examples

  • It was cheap
  • however, it broke.

Key rules

  • Transition words show how ideas connect: however (contrast), therefore (result), in addition (adding)
  • Use a comma after a sentence-opening transition
  • Do not join two complete sentences with a transition alone

Common mistakes

  • It was cheap;however, it broke. → It was cheap; however, it broke. (semicolon before, comma after)
  • It was cheap, however it broke. → It was cheap. However, it broke.

Use cases

  • Essays and reports
  • Argument writing
  • Explaining cause and effect
💡 Tip: Use transitions in moderation; too many make writing sound mechanical.
