Full Stops, Question and Exclamation Marks

Choose the correct ending mark.

Examples

  • What time is it?

Key rules

  • A full stop ends a statement; a question mark ends a direct question; an exclamation mark shows strong feeling
  • Do not use a full stop after a question
  • Use one exclamation mark at most, and avoid them in formal writing

Common mistakes

  • What time is it. → What time is it?
  • Wow!!! → Wow!

Use cases

  • Writing messages and social media posts
  • Writing dialogues in stories
  • Proofreading an email before sending
💡 Tip: Read the sentence with the intonation you intend: if it rises at the end, use a question mark.
