Linking R and Intrusive R
Add r between vowel sounds in some accents.
Examples
- far away โ far-r-away
Key rules
- In many accents, the r at the end of a word is pronounced when the next word starts with a vowel: far away โ far-r-away
- This is called linking r
- Some speakers add an intrusive r between vowel sounds, such as law and order
Common mistakes
- far away without a link โ far-r-away in connected speech
- saw it โ saw-r-it (in some accents)
Use cases
- Natural speech
- Listening to British English
- Pronouncing connected phrases
๐ก Tip: Listen to how native speakers link words and copy the pattern, but do not overuse the extra r.
